This appropriately scaled mall is set within the dense urban fabric of the historic Meadowlands neighbourhood in “old” Soweto, South of Johannesburg.
The retail Box requirements of tenants dictated that the building needed to take the form of an urban lighthouse or a ship amongst the sea of small scale individual homes.
The site is set as an island with five roads leading up to and passing it, necessitating the building to have a specific identity.
To this end, a short mall with an anchor was provided with a large, over sailing double level glass façade sitting above it. The glass box is accessed by the upper level parking deck facilitating convenience retail destinations, with the lower mall providing the daily need retail experience.
A large number of fast food outlets at the lower mall edge entrance activates the lower parking interface at all times, allowing the centre to become a true community hub of interaction.
Simple plastered facades are brightly coloured to create a continuous, safe and clean environment that is fun, vibrant and inducing future visits.
