Reshaping Solid Space

The Office Tower at Eastgate is currently the most visible spatial box in the neighbourhood. Sitting at six storeys above a five-storey podium, this hardly qualifies as a “tower” but it dominates the valley in which it sits and its proximity next to the main eastern arterial highway into Johannesburg adds importance to its position.

While the structural frame was preserved and added to, the shape and sense of the tower is completely revitalised into a sloping “active” form representing movement on the roofscape of the shopping centre.

Built to accommodate an upscale gym with offices above, the old “solidity and strength” of the current configuration are replaced with “transparency and sensuous energy” to convey a new participatory presence in the environment.
