Contemporisation And Redevelopment

This super regional shopping centre is well established in the east of Johannesburg. Since 1978 it has been adjusted three to four times internally, but has never had a major facelift.

The conceptual approach for the new makeover is essentially to create a new, contemporary aesthetic with new physical retail spaces in support of that.

A major focus for the project was creating a new entertainment node comprising restaurants, a fast food court and cinemas, which involved moving the existing cinema complex to the roof. This lead to further opportunities to explore a sports arena comprising mini football courts, cricket nets, skate parks and various other potential activities to retain children and more youthful patrons.

Additional floors of parking were also added to compensate for the additional 15 000m2 of retail space, which incorporates landscaped façades and more modern interactive signage features. Entrances were also upgraded as were all the old precast façades which allow the centre to achieve further market dominance and longevity.
